Buffy dispatches Caleb once and for all and shares an evening with Angel talking about where they are in life. She admits that Spike now has a soul and is “in her heart,” but she professes no desire for a relationship with either of the vampires. Instead, she wants to discover the person she’s destined to become — if she makes it through the impending apocalypse.

Buffy again faces off with Caleb, this time armed with a powerful new weapon: the Scythe, which she slides effortlessly from its rocky resting place. But before Buffy can deploy her new toy, Caleb reveals that Faith and the potentials have fallen victim to his latest experiment in demolitions. Buffy rushes off the find Faith injured, several potentials dead, and three über-vamps on the loose. 
While Buffy searches for someplace to get some sleep, Faith takes command of the Potentials and settles on a scheme to kidnap one of the Bringers. Dawn locates a spell to communicate with the captive enemy, who reveals the location of this brethren. Meanwhile, Spike, having learned of Buffy’s ouster, locates the distraught Slayer and offers comfort to her wounded psyche.
While Xander recovers at the hospital from having his eye gouged out, Buffy has to deal with the emotional fallout of having dragged her friends and the potentials into an ambush. Meanwhile, the citizens of Sunnydale stage a mass exodus from their apocalypse-plagued town.
With Spike missing, the gang try to cope and clear the damage done to the Summer’s home. Giles, having survived that attack arrives with three young girls he identifies as potential slayers. He reveals that the ‘First Evil’ is killing off the line of slayers in an attempt to rid the world of good, leaving the Hellmouth free to open again.
Anya grants a young woman’s wish helping a girl get revenge on an entire fraternity by having a spider demon tear their hearts out. The violent and deadly act of vengeance leaves Anya completely guilt-ridden and puts Buffy in a position where she must face-off with Anya.
Buffy is settling in as a counselor at the high school helping troubled teens and sorting out problems. However, she is left speechless when a student named Cassie tells her that she has only a week to live. Suspecting the girl is suicidal, Buffy investigates and discovers a cult of students playing with dark magics and comes to believe Cassie may be psychic.
The Trio move full swing into their biggest plan ever, stealing a pair of mystical orbs which give the bearer super strength and invulnerability. They attempt to rob an armoured van but Buffy crashes the party resulting in a battle between her and Super Warren.
Anya returns to seeks vengeance on Xander, but do to a clause in the vengeance code she cannot do so herself and finds it hard to get anyone to wish harm upon him. Meanwhile, Xander, Buffy, and Willow discover that the trio has been spying on them all over town with a series of video cameras.
Buffy’s attempt to re-enroll at UC-Sunnydale fails because she missed the application deadline meaning outside of slaying, her only other outlet is the Doublemeat Palace. Riley Finn returns to Sunnydale in pursuit of a demon and seeks Buffy’s help in killing it. He also comes with a surprise… he is married.
