The gang prepares for graduation which Willow views with gleeful reminiscent excitement, Xander fears, and Buffy sees as pointless. Meanwhile Mayor Wilkins is preparing for the Ascension and dispatches Faith to kill a local geology professor who we later learn may have discovered the body of a very old, very large demon. Buffy goes to Angel to investigate the dead professor some more but Faith shoots him with a poisoned arrow which slowly begins to kill him. Wesley tells Buffy the Watcher’s Council refuses to help Angel because he is a vampire. Buffy promptly quits the council dismissing Wesley’s authority once and for all.

Angel, reeling from the Mayor’s talk, decides to do the right thing and breaks up with Buffy knowing he can never give her a real life. Buffy has to put her pain aside when a group of hell hounds trained to attack people wearing formal clothing besiege Sunnydale.

Buffy is stung or something by a demon in a fight and becomes infected with its ability to read minds. She finds this extremely cool at first, but soon no one wants to be around her lest they give up their inner most secrets, and eventually the power is uncontrollable driving Buffy to the brink of insanity. To further complicate matters, she telepathically overhears a voice threatening kill everyone at the school.

A demon makes an offer to Buffy while on patrol – $5000 for the Books of Ascension which The Mayor needs. Before the deal can be made, Faith is sent by The Mayor to retrieve the books which she does after she kills the demon.

Because Anya’s amulet was destroyed, she is destined to live out the rest of her life as a mortal (she is also flunking math). Her old boss, D’Hoffryn, refuses to help her. So, Anya asks Willow to fold time with spell. Willow agrees but the spell goes awry bringing Willow’s vampire doppelgänger into the real Sunnydale.

Buffy decides to confess the events of last week after breaking down in front of Willow. She goes to Giles but Faith has beat her to the punch and told him that Buffy killed the Dept. Mayor. Angel weighs in and tries to reason with the rouge Slayer, but is interrupted by Wesley, who plans to take Faith to England where the Council will deal with her.
