Vampire Lore

November 29th, 2011 by admin

It seems that the lore of a vampire changes every second these days, so in order to eliminate theThe Master confusion between the different lore out there we have put together the rules for vampires as they pertain to the Buffyverse.

“This world is older than any of you know, and contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise.  For untold eons, demons walked the Earth, made it their home, their Hell.  In time, they lost their purchase on this reality, and the way was made for mortal animals.  For Man.  What remains of the Old Ones are vestiges: certain magicks, certain creatures… The books tell that the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood.  He was a human form possessed – infected – by the demon’s soul.  he bit another and another… and so they walk the Earth, feeding.  Killing some, mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind.  Waiting for the animals to die out and the Old Ones to return.”  – Giles, in “The Harvest”

  • “To make you a vampire, they have to suck your blood and then you have to suck their blood.” – Buffy, in “Welcome to the Hellmouth”
  • Vampires are not considered human in the Buffyverse, instead they are demons who have taken over human corpses. “A vampire isn’t a person at all. It may have the movements, the memories, even the personality, of the person it takes over, but it is a demon at the core. There’s no halfway.” – Giles, in “Angel”
  • Vampires cannot fly in the Buffyverse.
  • Vampires cannot shape-shift which means they cannot turn into bats.
  • Vampires have no reflections in the mirror, but they do cast shadows
  • Vampires do not need to breathe, but their lungs do function.
  • Vampires can use hypnosis, but not all are as skilled in it as others may be.
  • Vampires cannot enter a private home without an invitation. Once invited they are free to return at any time and the invitation cannot simply be rescinded.
  • Vampires fear places of worship, hallowed ground, and religious symbols. While vampires can enter churches and houses of worship, touching hallowed or consecrated grounds causes them great suffering. “We are defined by the things we fear. This symbol, these two planks of wood, it confounds me. Suffuses me with mortal dread. But fear is in the mind. Like pain, it can be controlled. If I can face my fear, it cannot master me.” – The Master, in “Nightmares”
  • Vampires can be killed by direct sunlight, but if there is a heavy overcast or other covering they can survive for a period of time.
  • Vampires have healing abilities and can recover from almost anything.
  • Vampires form clans or families in order to further their chaotic impulses. Vampires are very particular about who they will sire and allow into the clan.
